What it is
The official name is the “Application for a Letter of Residence Information in the Kingdom of Thailand” (CM form tool, fetched 2026-09-30). It’s a letter from immigration confirming your registered address, based on your TM30.
Who needs it
Anyone who wants to (CM form tool, fetched 2026-09-30):
- apply for or renew a car or motorcycle driving licence;
- buy, sell or transfer a car or motorcycle;
- get a yellow house book (Tor Ror 13) or pink ID card;
- open a bank account.
DTV holders can get one at Chiang Mai (founder, field-verified 2026-09-25). The Chiang Mai form has an “I hold an Electronic Visa (E-Visa)” option (same source). Note that getting the letter doesn’t guarantee a bank or the DLT will accept your visa: see Money and banking and Driving licence.
Before you start
- Your TM30 must be on file, with a current “Stay Until” date if it was filed online. If there’s no check-out date, attach your rental agreement (CM form tool, fetched 2026-09-30). See TM30 for tenants.
- For a bank account: ask the bank for the exact branch name first. “You will not be able to open a bank account if the branch names do not match” (same source).
- Timing: the certificate is valid for 30 days from its date of issue, not from when you collect it (founder, 2026-09-30). With a 10-working-day wait to collect it in Chiang Mai, your usable window after collection is shorter than 30 days — plan backwards from your DLT or bank date.
Steps (Chiang Mai)
- Fill in the online form at chiangmai-immigration-form.pages.dev, linked from Chiang Mai Immigration’s site (fetched 2026-09-30). Pick your reason(s); it builds the bilingual form and your document checklist. Print on A4.
- Copy your documents and hand-sign every copy in ink (CM form tool, fetched 2026-09-30).
- Apply in person at Chiang Mai Immigration, next to Chiang Mai airport, 8:30 am to 12 pm, Monday to Friday, excluding Thai holidays (same source). You sign a consent form in front of the officer there.
- Pay 200 THB and come back to collect it after 10 working days (founder, 2026-09-26).
Outside Chiang Mai, use the Bangkok form: Letter of Residence application (PDF).
Documents (all applicants)
From the Chiang Mai checklist (CM form tool, fetched 2026-09-30):
- the printed, signed application form;
- copies of every passport page with a Thai visa or entry/exit stamp (the founder also brought the photo page);
- a copy of your e-Visa, if you hold one (DTV holders do);
- a copy of your TM30 receipt;
- proof of residence, one of: house registration (Tabien Baan), a rental agreement signed by both parties, or a sale and purchase agreement;
- one photo, 2 inches or 4 x 6 cm, front view, white background, taken in the last 6 months.
Extra for vehicles (same source):
- buying used or transferring: copies of the registration book’s first page and ownership history page, and the previous owner’s ID card or passport;
- buying new: a sales receipt, booking form or dealer deposit receipt;
- selling: a copy of the registration book cover (green for motorcycles, blue for cars) and the page showing you as owner;
- closing a finance loan: a zero-balance statement, debt clearance letter or proof of final instalment.
Cost
200 THB at Chiang Mai (founder, 2026-09-26). Thaiger quotes roughly 200 to 500 THB depending on where you get it (Thaiger, fetched 2026-09-30). Agencies charge about 1,000 THB for faster delivery (founder; agency pricing, informational).
Time needed
A morning at immigration (expect roughly 2 to 3 hours in Chiang Mai, founder), then 10 working days until collection.
Common pitfalls
- No TM30, or a stale one. Sort it first.
- Unsigned copies. Every copy must be hand-signed.
- Arriving after 12 pm. Applications are mornings only.
- Wrong bank branch name on a bank-account letter.
- Getting it too early, or too late. The 30 days run from the date of issue, not collection, so plan your DLT or bank visit to land inside that window.
Questions
Can DTV holders get a residence certificate?
Yes, at Chiang Mai (founder, in person, 2026). The Chiang Mai form also has an option for e-Visa holders.
How long does it take in Chiang Mai?
10 working days, for 200 THB (founder, 2026).
How long is it valid?
30 days, counted from the date it's issued, not from the date you collect it (founder, 2026-09-30). Since Chiang Mai takes 10 working days to issue it, plan your DLT or bank appointment to fall inside that window after collection.
