Get a re-entry permit before leaving Thailand, so you keep your current permission to stay

Who this is for

  • This applies if you're planning to leave Thailand and come back, and you want to keep your current permission to stay, like an annual extension. Leave without one, and your permission to stay ends.

  • Essential if you're on a Non-O retirement or marriage extension. If you're on a DTV with an extension, it's not confirmed yet whether you'd ever actually need one.

  • Choose single (one trip) or multiple (every trip within your remaining permitted stay).

When

  • This comes up when you log a planned trip abroad while holding an extension or another permission worth keeping.

  • It's valid until your current permission to stay ends. It doesn't extend your stay.

  • A single permit covers one trip. A multiple permit covers every trip until your permission expires. A new annual extension needs a new permit.

Ways to do it

Steps

  1. Decide single or multiple

Single is 1,000 THB; multiple is 3,800 THB. Multiple pays off from the 4th trip.

  2. Fill in form TM.8 and attach a photoonline

4x6 cm, taken within roughly 6 months (the English wording on the form is garbled; treated as “within 6 months” with a caveat).

  3. Copy your passport pages

Bio data page, expiry page, edits page if any, last entry stamp, and extension stamp if any.

  4. Apply at an office or the airportin person

In person at the immigration office for your area, or at Passport Control (international departures) on the day you leave, where offered.

  5. Leave and re-enter

The officer stamps your entry against the permit; your previous “admitted until” date stays in force.

  6. Log your return

Your 90-day count restarts at day 1. Your landlord must file a new TM30.

Common problems

  • Leaving without a permit while on an extension terminates the permission to stay. The most costly mistake in this group of processes.

  • Assuming the airport counter is always available. Confirmed for Bangkok airports only; Chiang Mai isn't confirmed yet.

Unverified Not confirmed for Chiang Mai airport, checked 25 September 2026

  • Expecting it to extend your stay. It only keeps the remaining period.
